John Dutton, D.V.M.
Research Focus
Dr. Dutton graduated from Texas A&M University at Galveston with a degree in Marine Biology and Marine Fisheries. After several years of working in those fields, he began a career in biomedical research in 2001. He worked as a technician with several species including nonhuman primates at a contract research organization, and later as a laboratory manager at a major university studying pediatric brain tumors in mice. He attended veterinary school with the goal of becoming more broadly involved in supporting biomedical research and providing care for research animals.
Dr. Dutton graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013, and completed a residency and fellowship in laboratory animal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2016. He has been a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine since 2017.
Along with routine clinical and research support, Dr. Dutton has an interest in colony health, model development, and containment studies. He has worked on GLP studies for several years in a variety of capacities. He has been active in training and education in many of his positions, from personnel training to lecturing in graduate-level courses. He has provided support for IACUC and Biohazard and Safety Committees at different institutions. He also remains engaged in professional organizations and public outreach in support of biomedical research and science.
