Genetic Variability of H5N1 Human Isolates Reveals Enhanced Replication and Pathogenicity

Dr Martinez-Sobrido and Dr. Elsayed

Researchers in the Martinez-Sobrido lab have identified unique mutations in an H5N1 strain isolated from a human case that increase replication in human cells and disease severity in animal models. Their analysis shows these mutations arose post-infection and underscores the importance of genomic monitoring and a One Health approach to understand host adaptation, assess antiviral efficacy, and guide strategies to limit further spread from mammalian reservoirs.
